About the Nintendo 64
Nintendo stayed with cartridges for the Nintendo 64 when everyone else moved to CD. Load times disappeared, but cartridges were expensive to make, and several major third-party series, Final Fantasy among them, went to PlayStation. Nintendo's own games carried the console: Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64 and GoldenEye 007.
Four controller ports made it the default party console of the late 1990s. That is still reflected in prices: Mario Party 1–3, Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 64 sell steadily at higher prices than most of the library. The Expansion Pak is required for Donkey Kong 64 and Majora's Mask, and one is often missing from consoles sold as "complete".
Large cardboard boxes were usually thrown away, so complete-in-box N64 games cost several times what the loose cart does. Reproduction carts are a growing problem, especially for the RPGs and Conker's Bad Fur Day.
