The National Videogame Museum Has Acquired A "Mythical" Nintendo PlayStation

"The OLDEST known existing Nintendo Playstation hardware artifact".

Once upon a time, Nintendo and Sony were such close buddies that they decided to create a console together – the legendary Nintendo Play Station (or "PlayStation" if you prefer).

As we all know, the arrangement was short-lived and Nintendo backed out of the deal, leaving Sony feeling like a jilted lover – but it would arguably have the last laugh as it would continue development of the PlayStation on its own, eventually creating the famous brand we know and love today.

"A Forgotten Castlevania Is Reborn On Game Boy" - 2007's Order of Shadows Lives On

GBC gets a 'demake' of the infamous mobile phone entry.

Released on Java-based phones back in 2007, Castlevania: Order of Shadows is considered the black sheep of the franchise's wider lineage, and with good reason – like many mobile games from the era before smartphones, it suffered from poor visuals and ropey controls.

In fact, the game's biggest claim to fame could be that it was one of the first games Tyrone Rodriguez worked on before he established Nicalis (Cave Story, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth).

Shigeru Miyamoto Predicted Animal Crossing's Appeal Over A Decade Before It Launched

"Imagine a game with only five houses".

The utterly brilliant translation site Shmuplations has just published a 1989 discussion between Shigeru Miyamoto and Shigesato Itoi, and during the surprisingly in-depth chat between the two legendary game designers, the former predicts the arrival of 'cosy' titles like Animal Crossing.

Originally published in Gamer Handbook and published shortly after the release of the first Mother game on the Famicom, the discussion sees Miyamoto and Itoi touch upon many different elements of game design in the late '80s – but when Miyamoto is asked about death in video games, the conversation becomes amazingly prescient:

"Why I Don't Have A Copy In My Hand?" - Frogger 3D Producer Is Amazed 3DS Game Is Now Highly Collectable

Tak Fujii can't quite fathom it.

Released on 3DS back in 2011, Alpha Unit's Frogger 3D didn't exactly cause shockwaves when it first launched – but it has since become something of a cult classic, and that has driven up its price on the secondary market.

This fact has surprised the game's producer, Takayuki "Tak" Fujii, who was recently alerted to the rising cost of the game in Japan by Twitter user and Japan resident Alex Kraus.

An easier way has been found to unlock the game's hidden teams.

You'd think, after being around for almost three decades, we'd have already unlocked all the mysteries associated with the 1996 SNES game Ken Griffey, Jr.'s Winning Run.

But recently, thanks to The Cutting Room Floor and one of their contributors, TakuikaNinja, a collection of previously unknown cheat codes has now come to light, offering another way for players to unlock the game's secret teams, including the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Arizona Diamondbacks, Team Nintendo, and Team Nintendo 64.

The Developer Behind Mortal Kombat's Fanmade Jaguar Port Sets Sights On The Sequel

Mortal Kombat II is finally coming to the Atari Jaguar.

TRU FUN Games, the solo developer who is currently working on Mortal Kombat's fanmade Jaguar port, has revealed plans to tackle the game's sequel, Mortal Kombat II, in a recent video update on his YouTube channel.

Mortal Kombat II, as you'll probably already be aware, never got an official Atari Jaguar port back in the early-to-mid '90s, similar to its predecessor. Instead, the fighting game sequel originally made its debut in arcades in 1993 before later receiving various ports to other consoles and platforms (including the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis, the Super Nintendo, Nintendo Game Boy, and Sega Game Gear, to name just a few).

Secret of Mana: Reborn has just been updated.

We have some potentially "history-making" news for Secret of Mana fans. A new update has just been released for Secret of Mana: Reborn, a ROM hack for the classic role-playing game from Square, featuring recreations of two previously unused locations cut from the finished game.

This essentially means that players can now go where no Secret of Mana fan has been in "over 30 years", including "the original path between the Water Palace and Neko’s" that was featured "extensively in prerelease images and magazine screenshots" and "the original concept for the Moogle Village", as it appeared in Famitsu shortly before being changed.

"More people need to try out Bangai-O".

Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaiō (or plain old Bangai-O, if you prefer) hit the Nintendo 64 all the way back in 1999, and was exclusive to Japan at the time. It's now one of the console's most expensive games, thanks to excellent quality and low print run, but it did get a Western release – just on a different system.

The Dreamcast version – which arrived a few months after the N64 one in Japan and would come to North America and Europe in 2001 and 2000 respectively – had its localisation handled by Conspiracy Entertainment, and the results left many fans feeling a little disappointed.

A New Custom Build Of BSNES Has Been Released, Featuring Multitap Support

Games with up to 5 active players now supported!

Usually, when it comes to playing SNES games online with multitap support, most people opt for using the popular emulator Snes9x, in conjunction with compatible frontends like RetroArch or Fightcade, with other emulators like BSNES typically lacking the necessary support to make them a viable alternative.

However, over the last 12 months, we've seen some promising new developments, with an individual named HeatXD unveiling a special fork of the BSNES emulator last year, integrated with GekkoNet (a P2P Rollback Game Networking SDK), which aims to make playing multiplayer titles online a little more convenient and "robust".

Why Should Sega Have All The Fun? Looks Like The SNES Is Getting A Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night Port, Too

It's still early days, but looking very promising indeed.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is widely regarded as the crowning glory of Konami's 40-year-old vampire-hunting series, and one of the best games of all time – so, when we heard news that it was being unofficially ported to the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive back in 2024, it didn't come as a massive shock. People cannot get enough of Alucard, clearly!

It would seem that another modder thinks that you can never have enough SotN love, as a separate porting project is in the works – this time for the Genesis' 16-bit rival, the Super Nintendo.

3DS Emulation Just Keeps On Getting Better

Emulator Azahar is making big strides recently.

We've been banging the drum for the 3DS quite a bit over the last few years, and with good reason. It's one of Nintendo's most interesting handhelds thanks to its autostereoscopic display, an amazing selection of games, and that downright lovable clamshell form factor.

One of the leading emulators in this space is Azahar, which is an Android-based app which replicates the performance of the legendary dual-screen handheld – and, when you consider the sudden influx of Android portables which possess two displays, it's easy to see why this particular emulator has been getting so much love of late.

The Atari 7800 Is Getting Its Very Own Roguelike, And You Can Play It Now

A new beta version of 'Rogue 7800' has just been released.

Following its original release on Unix-based computer systems in the early '80s, the dungeon crawler Rogue received a bunch of commercial ports to home platforms, with the help of publishers like Mastertronic and Epyx; this included versions for Atari 8-bit computers and the Atari ST.

However, when it came to Atari's home console, the 7800, players were left wanting for a similar kind of dungeon-crawling experience, with the closest available parallel being Sculptured Software's 1989 retooling of John Palevich's Dandy, more commonly known as Dark Chambers.
