"It Would Have Been A Huge Success" - The Pitch Behind The Sega Handheld That Might Have Rivalled The Game Boy

"In my opinion, there was no chance of failing".

Sega and Nintendo were fierce hardware rivals for much of the '80s and '90s, with the latter usually being more commercially successful than the former.

One contest that Nintendo won relatively comfortably was in the handheld arena. Its Game Boy portable launched in 1989 and sold (alongside the Game Boy Color) sold almost 120 million units over its lifespan.

Random: Did You Spot This NES-Related Blunder In Stranger Things Season 5?

The Duffer Brothers give Nintendo's console too much credit.

The Duffer Brothers' hugely successful Stranger Things is now into its fifth and final season, bringing to a close the '80s-infused horror sci-fi series that kicked off all the way back in 2016.

Nostalgia for the decade that gave us the Compact Disc and Prozac is a huge part of Stranger Things' appeal, and we've already seen pop culture icons like Ghostbusters, Dragon's Lair and Transformers referenced in previous seasons.

Update: New update fixes issues with overlocking modes.

When we reviewed the excellent Analogue 3D recently, one negative we picked up on was the fact that flash cart compatibility was inconsistent.

Some Analogue 3D owners have reported that older flash carts work fine, while others have said that more recent examples, like the EverDrive X5 and X7, do not. From my testing, my X7 certainly didn't work with the FPGA console.

Donkey Kong Country is notable for its use of CGI visuals, but the game's music is almost as memorable.

"It was really expensive to do all this s**t in those days".

When people think about The Beatles in relation to the world of games, the 2009 rhythm title The Beatles: Rock Band is usually the first thing to spring to mind — and for pretty understandable reasons.

Not only was it the most successful game to ever be released based on the history of the band, but it was also the only Beatles game to be produced with the input of all the surviving members (Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney), as well as the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison.

24 Years After It Launched, Fans Have Finally "Fixed" Mario Kart: Super Circuit

Now the whole game runs at 60fps!

Mario Kart: Super Circuit is one of the games I remember most fondly when thinking about the Game Boy Advance. The console was still fresh and new back in 2001, and soon after launch it was playing host to a portable version of one of my favourite SNES games of all time. It felt too good to be true.

I still enjoy Super Circuit, even after almost a quarter of a century, so it amazes me now to hear that the game has been "fixed" by fans to make it even better.

Unleash the beast.

As you'll be aware if you've already checked out our review of the Analogue 3D, this FPGA-based N64 reproduction has some amazing tricks up its sleeve – perhaps the most striking being its ability to give N64 software a performance boost via overclocking.

While it's possible to run the Analogue 3D in 'original hardware' mode and have games performance exactly as you remember them, three overclock options – 'Enhanced' (RAM boost), 'Enhanced+' (RAM and GPU boost), and 'Unleashed' (RAM, GPU and CPU boost) – give you the chance to draw more performance out of the system's 220k LE Altera Cyclone 10GX FPGA chip.

"I Never Thought That It Would Be Possible" - Ridge Racer Comes To The GBA

"Wow! What a start!".

The GBA was home to some unlikely ports back in the day – I still recall being part puzzled, part impressed that Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio were transferred to Nintendo's million-selling handheld – but one Ridge Racer fan is working on what could potentially be the most impressive example yet.

Gvaliente's 'RR Project' is an unofficial attempt to recreate Namco's iconic Ridge Racer on the GBA, and, as you can see from the footage below, it's already looking pretty impressive.

"I Probably Wouldn't Do That Again" - Outlaws Level Designer Shares The Story Behind Its Most Infamous Level

"They pushed me to make a very difficult puzzle level".

With LucasArts' 1997 western-themed shooter, Outlaws, and its expansion, A Handful of Missions, set to get a shiny new remaster from Nightdive Studios later this month, Nightdive's Locke Vincent recently sat down to interview one of the game's original level designers, Kevin Schmitt, for the company's YouTube channel.

The conversation, which is now available to watch in full, covered a ton of interesting topics, such as how Schmitt originally started out at LucasArts and how the Outlaws team prepared ahead of developing the Western. However, for us, at least, it was his recollections of designing the Sawmill — one of the game's most notoriously challenging levels — that we personally found the most interesting story to listen to and the one we wanted to highlight here.

'Final Fantasy Mystic Quest' Just Got A New Playable Demo For Your Sega Mega Drive / Genesis

The fanmade demo covers the opening sections of the game.

An unofficial Mega Drive / Genesis port of the RPG Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (otherwise known as Mystic Quest Legend in Europe and Final Fantasy USA: Mystic Quest in Japan) is currently in the works, from a couple of fan developers named NicoMegadrive and Laurent Crouzet.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, as many of you will no doubt already know, was a Final Fantasy spin-off that Square developed for the SNES back in the early '90s, and was designed to introduce more North American players to the RPG genre. However, despite some fairly enthusiastic reviews from places like Electronic Gaming Monthly and Electronic Games, it ultimately went on to fail in its mission, earning a reputation in more recent years as one of the series's weaker entries, due to its simplicity compared to other games in the series.

"Forgotten" Zelda Adventure Gets Ported To Game Boy Color With Special 'DX' Update

Update: Zelda's Adventure DX is now available.

While the Philips CD-i titles Zelda: Faces of Evil and Zelda: Wand of Gamelon are relatively well-known, the third outing on the system – 1996's Zelda's Adventure – is less famous, and some would argue that's for a good reason – it's pretty terrible.

However, that hasn't stopped John Lay from giving the title a new lease of life as a fully-fledged (but obviously unofficial) Game Boy port. "Zelda’s Adventure looked interesting and I thought it would be fun to play on a portable system," he says. "I chose the Game Boy because of the existing Zelda games on the system."

This includes the Japanese developer, Lavenstar Games, who previously worked on the cutscene scripting for the 2012 Suikoden title, and developers based in Canada who also reportedly have game dev experience "dating back to the early 2000s".

Mellow yellow.

Atari has done an excellent job of mining its illustrious past in recent years, giving us the Atari 2600+ and the Atari 7800+ – as well as a selection of brand-new carts to play on them.

The company's big release for Christmas 2025 takes a slightly different approach, however; rather than give us an entirely new 'Plus' console this year, Atari has taken the original 2600+ and given it a Pac-Man lick of paint and bundled it with one of the most remarkable 'retro ports' we've seen in a long time.
